Description

Our verdict: A strong, fast-acting spray for treating the places spiders come in, and for dealing with spiders you can see. Cypermethrin is a synthetic insecticide, so the barrier it leaves is tougher than a natural spray’s. The 500ml can suits a few rooms or a garage rather than a whole house.

Best for: spot treatment, garages, sheds and problem rooms  |  Size: 500ml  |  Active: cypermethrin

What is Karlsten Spider Killer Spray?

Karlsten is a UK home-and-garden pest brand. Its Spider Killer is a ready-to-use cypermethrin spray designed to kill spiders on contact. Once it dries, it leaves a residual barrier that Karlsten says lasts up to 6 weeks, so spiders that cross treated surfaces later are also affected. It is HSE registered (HSE 10668).

Cypermethrin is a synthetic pyrethroid. Compared with natural pyrethrum sprays such as Pestmatic, it tends to hold up longer on surfaces, which makes it a good fit for garages, sheds, window frames and other spots that spiders keep returning to.

How to use it properly

  1. Vacuum webs and egg sacs from corners, ceilings and behind furniture.
  2. Spray entry points. Treat window frames, door thresholds, vents, air bricks and gaps around pipes.
  3. Treat edges and dark spaces. Spray skirting boards, under beds, behind wardrobes, and in garages, sheds and lofts.
  4. Spray visible spiders directly to kill them on contact.
  5. Keep children and pets away until treated areas are dry, and reapply as the label directs.

Pros and cons

Pros Cons
  • Kills on contact
  • Leaves a residual barrier on treated surfaces
  • Indoor and outdoor use
  • Well-known UK brand, widely available
  • 500ml covers less than a 1-litre bottle, so it’s less suited to a whole-house treatment
  • Very toxic to aquatic life, so keep it away from ponds and fish tanks
  • Cypermethrin is hazardous to cats, so keep them away from treated areas
  • Won’t stop spiders getting in through gaps you haven’t treated

Who should pick something else?

Frequently asked questions

Does Karlsten spider killer kill on contact?

Yes. It’s designed to kill spiders it’s sprayed on directly, and to leave a residual barrier on treated surfaces.

Where should I spray to keep spiders out?

Concentrate on entry points: window frames, door thresholds, vents and air bricks. Then treat skirting boards and dark corners. Spraying open floor or walls does little.

Is it safe around pets?

Keep pets out until treated surfaces are dry, and take extra care with cats, which are especially sensitive to cypermethrin. Cover fish tanks before spraying. See our guide for homes with pets.
