Description

Our verdict: The pick if you want a non-pyrethroid bed bug spray, or if a cypermethrin product such as REPELEM hasn’t worked. The plant-based formula is designed to be used directly on mattresses, and its maker says it kills resistant bed bugs. The trade-off is a smaller bottle and a shorter-lasting residue, so plan on repeat applications.

Best for: mattresses, homes with children or pets, suspected resistant bugs  |  Size: 480ml  |  Type: plant-based

What is EcoVenger Bed Bug Killer?

EcoVenger is the international name for EcoRaider, a plant-based bed bug spray made by Arber. Most supermarket bed bug sprays use pyrethroids such as cypermethrin. EcoVenger instead uses a formula based on plant extracts, including cedar oil and geraniol. Because it doesn’t rely on pyrethroids, its maker says it also kills bed bugs that have become resistant to them, and resistance is common in UK infestations.

Arber says EcoRaider achieved 100% contact kill of adults and nymphs in published entomology trials, performs strongly against eggs, and leaves a dried residue that keeps working for about two weeks. It’s marketed as safe to use directly on mattresses and box springs, which is the main reason people choose it over chemical sprays.

How to use it properly

  1. Wash and dry everything you can. Wash bedding and nearby clothes at 60°C and tumble dry on high.
  2. Vacuum the bed area. Do the mattress seams, bed frame, headboard and skirting boards, then bin the vacuum contents outside in a sealed bag.
  3. Spray directly onto bugs and hiding places. It works best on contact, so soak the seams, tufts, piping, bed frame joints and cracks where you’ve seen bugs or dark spotting.
  4. Let it dry, then make the bed. The dried residue carries on working on surfaces for roughly two weeks, according to the maker.
  5. Re-treat every 7–14 days until you see no new signs for at least two weeks. Use bed bug interceptors under the bed legs to check.

Pros and cons

ProsCons
  • Not a pyrethroid, so it’s an option when cypermethrin sprays have failed
  • Designed to be used directly on mattresses and box springs
  • Maker reports strong results against eggs as well as adults and nymphs
  • Plant-based, with a mild cedar scent
  • 480ml goes quickly on a double bed plus frame, so you’ll likely need more than one bottle
  • Residue lasts around two weeks, so you’ll re-treat more often than with chemical sprays
  • May cause an allergic skin reaction, so wear gloves
  • An imported US formula, so read the label carefully before use

Frequently asked questions

Is EcoVenger the same as EcoRaider?

Yes. EcoVenger is the name Arber uses for EcoRaider outside the US. It’s the same plant-based bed bug formula.

Can I spray EcoVenger directly on my mattress?

Yes. It’s designed for direct use on mattresses and box springs. Spray seams, tufts and edges thoroughly and let the mattress dry before making the bed.

Does EcoVenger kill bed bug eggs?

The manufacturer says it performs strongly against eggs. Eggs are still the hardest stage to kill, so repeat the treatment every 7–14 days until all activity stops.

Is it safe around children and pets?

It’s marketed as child- and pet-friendly, but keep children and pets away while you spray and until surfaces are dry, and always follow the label. It may cause skin irritation, so wear gloves.

EcoVenger or REPELEM: which should I buy?

Choose REPELEM for a larger, longer-lasting chemical treatment. Choose EcoVenger if you want to avoid pyrethroids, are spraying a mattress directly, or a cypermethrin spray hasn’t worked.
