Description
Our verdict: One of the cheapest and easiest ways to keep birds off seedlings, soft fruit and veg beds. Movement and flashes of light do the work, with no chemicals and no harm to birds. They’re most effective when you move them every few days, so birds don’t get used to them. Don’t expect them to shift pigeons off a roof.
Best for: veg patches, fruit, seedlings and allotments | Pack: 4 | Power: wind and sunlight
How reflective bird scarer windmills work
Each windmill has reflective silver blades that spin in the breeze, throwing flashes of light and making a gentle rustling sound. To a bird, sudden movement and glints of light signal danger, so they tend to avoid landing nearby.
Each one is roughly 50 × 20cm and made from UV-resistant polyester, so they cope with sun, rain and wind. You push the stake into soil, grass or a pot. They’re a cheap way to protect seedlings, strawberries, brassicas and fruit bushes.
How to get the best results
- Place them in open, breezy spots that get sunlight, so the blades spin and catch the light.
- Space them around the area you’re protecting. Four windmills suit a raised bed or a small veg patch.
- Move them every few days. Birds learn quickly that something which never moves isn’t a threat.
- Put them out before crops ripen, not after the birds have found them.
- Combine them with reflective tape or netting for crops birds really like.

Who should pick something else?
- Pigeons on the roof or under solar panels? Physical proofing such as bird spikes or a proofing mesh kit is the reliable fix.
- Sheltered balcony or shed? The battery-powered ISOTRONIC ultrasonic bird repeller doesn’t need wind.
- Fruit trees or long rows? OFFO reflective tape covers more length for less money.
Frequently asked questions
Do reflective windmills really keep birds away?
They work well in open, breezy, sunny spots, especially for seedlings and soft fruit, if you move them every few days. Birds that see the same object in the same place for weeks will start to ignore it.
How many windmills do I need?
Four suits a small veg bed or a few fruit bushes. For a larger plot, use more and space them evenly, or combine them with reflective tape.
Do windmills work on pigeons?
They can discourage pigeons from landing on a veg patch, but they won’t stop pigeons roosting on roofs, ledges or solar panels. That needs spikes or mesh. See why your roof became pigeon HQ.
Are they safe for pets and wildlife?
Yes. They work only through movement and reflection, with no chemicals.
